The last thing you want to happen is for your family member to get lost who-knows-where. There are certain steps you can take to prevent your pet from getting lost in the first place.
LOSS PREVENTION:
- Keep cats indoors and dogs under restraint or in a secure fenced yard when outdoors
- Make sure all dogs and cats wear collars with ID on them at all times
- When you travel, attach an extra ID tag with your temporary contact information.
- Have your pet microchipped and be sure to register your contact information with the manufacturer of your pet's chip right away.
- Take exta precautions for older pets. They are at greater risk due to diminished senses.
FINDING A MISSING PET:
- Make large posters on brightly colored paper. use large letters only with the most import information like the pets name, phone, reward. add a couple of color photos. keep one on hand showing you and your pet together, to indentify you as the cargiver. post posters through yur entire neighborhood.
- Search your your immediate neighborhood and check places your pet most likely would go, both familiar and nearby. check places hiding places where your pet could cawl.. Bring a squeaky toy or high volume toy, treats and foods they really like.
- Don't wait. After your first neighborhood search, call animal shelters immediatlt to file a lost animal report, email a photo visit or check web sites daily.
- Tell your neighbors chldren, joggers, postal carriers who are outdoors frequestly
- Leave items with a familar scent outside your home.
- Call and email local groomers and vets.
- Use the media. call local radio stations and schools that might announce it over the PA.
- If you suspect your pet has been stolden, report theft to the police.
- Dont give up! Reunions have happned months even years after!
