About Us

Few Steps From Home Animal Rescue, Inc. is an all-volunteer-run 501 C 3 non Profit rescue and sanctuary. We are committed to helping dogs
and cats across the USA.
Few Steps From Home Animal Rescue, was formed to help unwanted, abandoned, and abused animals get the medical attention, rehabilitation both physical & mental, and the love that they need.
We believe every pet deserves a "Happily Ever After", so we work very
hard to find them loving, responsible homes that they can finally call
their "Fur-ever Home".
Help us to help the animals who are just a Few Steps From finding their
"Forever Homes".
Please, won't you consider adopting, fostering, donating or volunteering
today?
History of Few Steps From Home
Few Steps From Home Animal Rescue was started in 2007 by Heather Smith. After volunteering and serving on a board of another local rescue in 2003 until 2006, she thought that she could serve animals better by opening her own non-profit animal rescue. In the previous rescue she volunteerd with , she became one of the first people in the area to accept, foster and rehome Pit Bulls  successfully since no other rescues within the area accepted the breed due to liability. She also spoke at Delta College and educated students on the Pit Bull breed and dog rescue.

About Our Founder and President
Heather became involved with rescuing animals shortly after she rescued a pit bull.  She located the owners but they told her they no longer wanted him. They didnt want to take him to animal control so they had hoped he would just get hit by a car. Bailey, who she ended up adopting, was the sole reason she became involved in a rescue group and to later go on to form her own. Heather was also diagnosed with Multuiple Sclerosis. She feels the animals save her as much, if not more, then she saves them

Our Rescue Now
After MANY trials and tribulations through the years we now finally have two facilities. All of our cats are located at a facility in Midland, Michigan. Most of our dogs are located at our facility in Gladwin, Michigan, however, we do operate out of a few carefully selected foster homes. Although, we are a small rescue we have been able to offer sanctuary for many dogs and cats who have been unable to be adopted due to age, health, or behavior issues.
We accept all breeds of both dogs and cats. We have the ability to take in some dogs that have extensive behavior issues and rehabilitate them. Heather has the ability to get to the root of the problems and fix them. She is experienced with not only basic dog training, but is also experienced in dog behavior and reading dogs body language.
Even though we have the ability to be a sanctuary for some pets we have very limited room.  Many of the dogs that are in rescue are here for quite some time before they can be adopted out. Many need to go through extensive rehabilitation before they can be placed for adoption. Many of the cats that come to us are elderly or they have medical issues. Our room for cats is very limited as well.

This is Rescue

The neglect changes you.
The abuse hardens you.
The suffering breaks you.
The ignorance angers you.
The indifference disturbs you.
The injustice destroys you.

On a daily basis…your faith will be tested.
Your heart will be wounded....
Your soul will be altered.

On a weekly basis…you’ll question yourself.
You’ll question your strength.
You’ll question the world.

On a monthly basis…you’ll fall down.
You’ll get up.
You’ll go on…

On a yearly basis…you’ll look back…
You’ll see faces…
You couldn’t save them.
You’ll learn to mourn.
To grieve.
To sob.
You’ll learn to trust a little less.
To do a little more.
To fight a little harder.
You’ll learn to try.
To hope.
To pray.
You’ll learn to fail.
To succeed.
To accept.
You’ll learn when to hold on.
When to give up.
When to let go.
You’ll learn who you are.
What you stand for.
Why that matters.

Then… at times… you’ll forget why you matter.
You’ll question what you’re doing.
You’ll wonder if it’s worth it.

But…here’s the good news… When you forget…
When you question…
When you wonder…
All you have to do…
Is take a look around…
And you’ll see them.

You’ll see their faces.
You’ll see their smiles.
You’ll feel their love.

In their eyes, you’ll see their journeys…
You’ll remember their beginnings…
You’ll know how far they’ve come…
You’ll remember when they didn’t know you…
When they didn’t trust you…
When they’d given up.

You’ll remember how you healed them…
How you loved them…
How they loved you, too.
And as you look back…
You’ll want to move forward…
For them… and because of them.

In your darkest hours, you’ll look around…
To find the differences made…the hope given…and the lives saved…
Because you existed.
In those moments, when you look into their eyes…every doubt will be erased.
Every question will be answered.
Every worry will subside.
Because in that instant…in each of your hearts…
You both share the very same thought: “Every bit of pain was worth it…for this moment here with you.”
And honestly…no matter what else happens…
Those moments hold all the strength you need…
To keep going.

Rescue is pain.
Rescue is joy.
Rescue is worth it…because they are worth it.
And that’s the honest truth.

And with that all being said, Thank you with all of our hearts to everyone who rescues!
